George Chapman

About

My work deals with urban spaces, particularly urban decay and disused spaces in cities. I am interested in how these spaces function for pedestrians and residents; how they tell a history of emotional, social, and economic development of the city.

I use colour and negative space to evoke the memory or nostalgia of these 'non-places', which are ambiguously represented between abstract and figurative painting. Simple geometric compositions strip away the unnecessary details. The viewer is left to contemplate the feeling of an empty space, its memory and history.

My paintings represent a part of the whole: an attempt to document the ephemeral, transitional nature of cities.
